“My favourite part of being the leader of the group is inspiring the children.”

Mark goes on to give his wife credit for standing by his side. “The driving force behind the group is definitely my wife. My wife is the one that is always there, always getting things ready for the kids, the one that puts in effort to get the fruit, the water, the juices so that the kids are not hungry when they show up to rehearsals. Our motivation is that we want to tell the children that they need to be the best that they can be. So when the children come to practice [we make sure] they’re not hungry.

Larnell Klaasen, Tenacity’s co-founder and assistant choreographer tells us, “We are aware of the negative elements the youth in our area are exposed to. Through dance, we hope to motivate them to follow their passions and have purpose in life. The organisation is a safe space where creative movement and personal growth is not limited.” Looking forward to his future, Larnell says, “I see myself as a high-level performer and fitness specialist whilst continuing to contribute to the development of Tenacity Movement.”

Founder, Joeline Daniels, trained at The Waterfront Theatre Company and decided to start the group when she realised there was a need for a performing arts group in her community.

Joeline’s wish is to see people from different backgrounds and cultures come together and share their diversity and unique talents within the group. “I aim to change their negative mind-sets to positive mind-sets through the performing arts.

Michelle David’s group spreads positive energy t

Michelle David’s group spreads positive energy to the youth of Bridgetown.

The Michelle Davids Dance Group is open to anyone who wants to develop their dancing skills, free of charge, no matter their background or previous dance experience.

Under Michelle’s leadership this group of mostly teenagers walks the talk in showing their community that through family, community and working together, anything is possible. Michelle says of herself, “Being the founder and group leader has changed my life to be more confident in my leadership abilities.”

When life begins to shed a tear, just perk up and say a cheer.

When Karin Verster first offered her help with the drummies programme at Hottentots Holland High School in 1982, she had no idea that 40 years later she would still be active in the sport, having made a difference to hundreds of girls' lives.

She formed a recognised Western Province Majorette Association with the National Federation SAMCA and is currently the chairlady of WP Majorette and Cheerleading Association.

Ithemba Labantu translated to English means “the hope of the people''.

Sonwabo Masepe, the organisation’s arts coordinator shares, “I came from a similar background during apartheid but through Arts I travelled the world and it changed my life.”

A vibrant arts programme provides access to opportunity. “It makes a difference knowing that the world is not just their box, they can meet other artists and meet other people and can think out of that box” says Sonwabo.

The organisation situated in Philippi, Cape Town, was established by Reverend Otto Kohlstock in 2003 and has now been running for 18 years. Current youth projects they provide in Philippi include; a marimba project, a drama/dance group, soccer, karate, basketball, youth counselling and a school after care program, as well as health care and nutrition, income generating projects, education, computer labs, business courses, motor mechanics and installation of solar energy systems.
